Our story

How Evelyn's came to be.

It started with a daughter telling her mother: "Mama, you've got to share this food with people."

Evelyn Lidell spent a lifetime in her mother's kitchen, learning the soul food recipes that had been passed down for generations. When her own daughter pushed her to open a restaurant, Evelyn finally said yes — and in 2019, the doors of Evelyn's Soul Food opened in Wharton, Texas.

Now her children and grandchildren cook alongside her. The fried chicken that's drawn lines out the door is brined the night before. The oxtails take a whole day to braise. The mac and cheese gets baked, not boiled. None of it is faster than it should be — that's the point.

Evelyn's been featured on ABC7 Los Angeles, ABC13 Houston, and is rated 5 of 5 on Tripadvisor. But the people who matter most are the regulars: the families who come every Sunday after church, the truckers who plan their routes around lunch, the kids who'll one day bring their own kids back.
